Gold Rush
In 1848, James Wilson Marshall was building a water-powered sawmill for John Sutter when the California Gold Rush began. He went to the river to get some water after he finished building the sawmill. In the river, he noticed several gleaming gold flakes. He went to tell John right away, and they tried to keep it a secret. However, word quickly spread, and the gold rush began.
The beginning of the Gold Rush was in 1849. People who migrated to California in search of gold were known as forty-niners since they arrived in 1849. Some of them became wealthy, but the vast majority did not. Some people began to sell their possessions. Many of them became wealthy, well-known, and politically influential. A woman's earnings can sometimes exceed those of her mining husband.
Levi Strauss, for example, was a salesman. He created and produced denim jeans that were both durable and fashionable. In 1848, the California Gold Rush came to an end1855. Many gold miners went back home because gold was harder to find; others found other work.
